Lesson 10--Wrap UP

Having used some of these resources before such as Proquest.  I was pleasantly surprised that Proquest is easier to use.  WHen I was teaching both teachers and students struggled with its use.   I was also very surprised that in one of the public documents it had my birthday wrong.  As well as how long I have lived in my town.

I am planning on showing our patrons what is available as well as some of my former colleagues, who are still in education use the sites.    There is so much information at hand that could be used in many different ways we need to make sure the public will have access to it.

Lesson 9 Ancestery

When I looked up my name my parents, grandparents and aunt and uncle all came up as well.  There were many more Fansins but not sure how many I am related to.   In one record they have my residency wrong.  I've lived in Parker all my life.  Another has my birthday wrong.  I'm getting old but I was not born in  1947.  On to check out my parents.

In finding my grandparents it is mind boggling that they have so many different spellings of my grandfathers last name.   In one instance there were four different spellings.  In a census record I checked my great uncle or great grandfather (not sure which) had been living with my grandparents.  My dad was a  boy at the time.

Here again I looked at my mom's family.    I located them in the 1920 cenus.  I had not realized that my grandmother had been born in Wisconsin.   I wanted to check the 1930 censu but they only had a partial listing and my grandfather was not on it.

In using the Sanborn Map of Parker 1935.  I was able to locate the Parker High School.    My parents house is a block from the school but I could not locate it.   The streets are not well defined so it is not easy to find  evey working from the school.

LESSON 8 CAMIO

Cornell University Library  is the proud owner of  the audiograph card
I learned his Indian Name  Tatanka Iyotake.  I also learned that he not only led the Sioux into Battle but he led the Cheyenne  in the Battle of Little Big Horn which is the battle that wiped out Custer and the 7th Calvary.  I find it strange that he was not jailed when he was captured but allowed to tour with Buffalo Bill Cody.  He was killed resisting arrest for not wanting to let go of sacred traditions.
I also learned that it was part of   part of the Native American Collection. (NAC)  and it had been  digitized for the Vanished Worlds, Enduring People exhibition.  The  autograph card has an envelope to go with it which I think makes the card more valuable.
I think its sad that he was arrested for not giving up his traditions. It makes you wonder if shooting him was just away to get rid of the famous Chief.

I searched South Dakota History.  There were 1545 titles that came up.    Most of these are made up of papers sent from one person to another.  One details a letter (Letter to Dr. Crouch : San Benito, Texas, 1916 Oct. 15)    Sending the skull of a Mexican bandit killed by SD Calvary.  University of California Berkley holds these papers which are part of a History of War in Mexico.
I narrowed my search to Laura Ingalls Wilder.  I've always loved her books.    The first Article I chose was Letters, 1945-1952.  These letters were between  Laura and  Clarence Kilbourn of Malone N.Y.  (Almanzo's hometown).  New York State Historical Documents---Location: Franklin County Historical and Museum Society,, Malone, NY.  There are five documents in this collection of letters talking about farm life and life in Malone New York.

My next article is Laura Ingalls Wilder family correspondence, 1861-1919 [electronic resource]. which are letters written to  relatives of Laura's mother Caroline.  The letters contain correspondence during the war and after.  The Wisconsin Historical Society hosts it.

I was disappointed in this search that I did not find any of Laura's papers hosted in SD.    Maybe I need to dig deeper.

Camio

Paul Revere tells the Story of Revolutionary times.  His artistry has also  withstood time with all of the silver ware(s) he has made.  I looked at examples of both his depiction of the Boston  Massacre and Silver Service
For some reason my pictures would not uploadto the blog.

When I typed in Sioux  I came with many pictures of items from the Sioux Culture.  Items such as pipes, portraits, pouches, dolls, pictures of sacred ceremonies and quilts.
One of things I found was this baby bonnet.
and this  double saddle bag.

This is a wonderful way for people to grasp the contributions and traditions of the Native Americans in South Dakota.
In searching Monet  he  appears to be a daring artist.  In one picture he put flags on both sides of the subjects which (*I don't know why) was daring in that day and time.  He also painted most of his pictures in watercolors.  He traveled extensively throughout Europe finding his inspirations for his paintings.

He painted the Water Lilies at his residence South of Paris.   This was painted during the last 30 years of his life.  IN this painting he used Oil on Canvas.  Most of his paintings during this time were of the lily pad that was located on his residence.

We can make this available to members of our community who are interested in art and are also interested in purchasing prints of paintings.

I saved pictures of Irish landscapes to my favorites.  The first one I chose was a watercolor of an Irish Cottage.  I am drawn to the bright colors of the picture.   My next one was  A road in Ireland.  it gave me a glimpse of what life in Ireland was in the past.   My third one was Irish Landscape.  I am part Ireland and I would love to see Ireland.  by choosing these pictures I get a little taste of Ireland.    My fourth picture is Morning Early, figures  fishing  cattle and landscape.   The picture below is of the Irish Landscape.
Camio is an excellent resource when looking for pictures and items to include in reports and for those who are looking for information---like Paul Revere.

Lesson 7 WORLD CAT

I chose Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Book for my title.  There 3995 copies world wide.       THe first library that popped up for me was the Aberdeen Public Library in South Dakota.

J. ROwling has written 8 Harry Potter Books. Seven of them precede this book and are  the Harry Potter Story.   The book she wrote was a series of short stories that was mentioned in one of the Harry Potter Book.s    I have always enjoyed the Harry Potter Series and in the past years  the subject has become saturated.

The OAister I chose was the Sioux in South Dakota  857 libraries in SD have this. Augustana is #1.
This  is a journal of Native American Stories, but it would not allow me to access t.

Lesson 6 -- EBooks on EbscoHost (formerly NetLibrary)

I looked up Secret Service.    There were several books that contained references to secret service but only a few that were actually about Secret Service.  I used many different ways to search but was not impressed with this program as I have been with the other programs.

Representing Popular Sovereignty : The Constitution in American Political Culture

Gale Virtual Library

Here Again I chose mythology.   The name of the book is U*X*L Encyclopedia of World Mythology, 2009.    I chose the story on Achilles.  Greek  Mythology.  This is an excellent way for students who are studying mythology to find referencs.  Not only does it give you a  an overview but it gives themes, discussion questions. and references for other characters asnd events involved with Achillles.

I typed the  name of the book  The Outsiders by S.E.Hinton  into the search box.  The information I received will not only help students writing themes/ bookreports etc. on the Outsiders  but it will also help teachers preparations as well..   In the library we can show students how to use the Gale Reference Library,    Patrons will be able to look up information they may need.

Lesson 4 ProQuest

I chose Celtic Mythology to research.  Not only does it have Celtic Myhological Encyclopedias .  It also has many  Celtic Mythology Stories.   I can find just about anything I would want to know through proquest.  I also like with Proquest that it is a valid resource.  It's not like wikopedia where anyone can add and subtract from the article.  Proquest has the advantage of saving libraries money on traditional magazines.  It also gives the patrons access to magazines and references  libraries would not normally carry.

People have varying interests and use this for different uses.  That is what makes proquest so unique.

I used library as my word.  The search brought up all types of magazines and journals that dealt with everything from library to literature to science and technology.  It's amazing how a library plays a part in so many different areas.

Learning Express

Lesson II LEARNING EXPRESS

I was in education for 30 years and taught 7th and 8th language arts. I took a 7th grade Comprehension test. These test will be a great help for students who would like to prepare for Dakota Step Tests. The format is the same . This inforation is also valuable to a teacher, tutor or parent who wants to help a child improve comprehension. Our library can show patrons this program and how to take advantage of these tests. I have in the past used the Learning Express so my high school students can take practice ACT tests. These tests are in a format that allows everyone to read and understand the scoring and what the answers should have been. The familar format of these tests are presented in such away that children, and young adults know how to approach the test.
'

Job Skills: I wish I would have been able to use this when I was teaching. It is a comprehensive program that allows patrons to work at their own pace through a comprehensive job skills course. I chose the resume writing and I was very impressed with thoroughness of the lessons.
I especially liked the format of these lessons.

SIRS

LESSON III SIRS

SIRS Is a very user friendly site. I like the format of the program the information was easy to find if children are taught to use the signs (the little TV screens) the should have no problem finding information they can read. The only drawback I can see if students are limite to information that has an express time limit. Such as no information can be used that is more than 3 years old.... I also like the choice of materials. the key provides the patrons with a world of useful information. This is a very user friendly site.

I chose the country of Ireland. THe article is packed with information about the country. I love the idea of graphic organizers. Especially giving an organier for the different levels of difficulty/ages. This is another useful tool. This site makes the search for information so easy. The flag, the map and other information on Ireland is in one place instead of having to jump around the web looking for information. This helps provide success in locating information
I especially like the idea the children will be able to find the information on their own once they get started. I also like being able to email the article to myself.

I chose a map of Ireland for my map. The map that I chose would be used for touring Ireland. It has th names of towns as well as pictures of the sites of interest including the Blarney Castle and Cliffs of Moher.

I liked the activities part of the data base. When hosting summer reading we use a wide variety of activites with our clases. The activities page which provides a large amount of ideas is a find for anyone needing activities. I'm sure we willtry to work in the plays, read aloud stories as well as the activities.

I chose Cell Phones in School because I know first hand what a problem this can be. I was impressed with the layout of the article. The format is easy to follow and I know where to look for my information. The analysis questions are valuable. It would be very easy to start a discussion based on these questions. Additional resources are provided as well as citations. The article is clear and concise and presents a balanced picture of both sides of the topics. Other research is readily available. This article has in its Research Tools information and help (Graphic Notes) to help keep the student organized and provided with help.

I love mythology. I like the idea of having all the information at my finger tips instead of having to surf the web to find it. When it is broken down into categories in both search form and articles it makes it easier to read. I browsed through the article on Harry Potter. I had categorized him as fantasy had not thought of him as being in the category of mythology. My problem with the site is that there are not enough articles on Greek or Native American mythology.

WORLD BOOK

I chose the mammal the squirrel.   I liked the easy way it was written with just enough info to cover the topic.   I also liked the idea that students read along  with the article as information is played for them.
The World Book Information Finder provided more information that was a higher readibility level.  But again students could listen to the article which is invaluable for children struggling wih reading!
The online reference gives you specific articles but it also gives you primary and secondary references.  The outline of the Article is very helpful.  This would be very usable from Middle School students through adults taking classes.

The Spanish  World Book can be of great use to  Spanish children and adults who are looking for information  in both  cases it gives the patron access to the information  easily without having to cope with the language barrier.  THis will be invaluable to our libray in helping Spanish speaking patrons find the information they need.
